Buxton CrescentBuxton has been popular with visitors since the Romans came and built baths here, in fact it was the famous Buxton Spa waters that made Buxton popular again centuries later when it was believed that its spa mineral water had special healing powers. Just like another famous Roman town further south, Buxton has its own grand Crescent (although not as large) designed by John Carr and modelled on the one in Bath.

The Slopes BuxtonBuxton can also brag of having the largest unsupported domed roof in the UK, even larger than the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. The building originally part of the 5th Duke of Devonshire's Great Stables, now forms part of the University of Derby.

No visit to Buxton would be complete without a visit to the Pavilion Gardens (located on the doorstep of the Westminster Hotel) with its 23 acres of landscaped gardens, streams and lake is a great place to spend some time strolling around and relaxing. If you're feeling hungry then the Pavilion Gardens can offer 3 places to eat, a licensed restaurant, a self service café and a coffee shop.

Buxton Market with the Town Hall in the backgroundBuxton is a Market Town and although it no longer has a livestock market, it does have a thriving twice weekly market where all sorts of goods can be bought. The majority of Buxton's main shopping area is pedestrianised and during the Buxton Festival many street performers can be found performing there.

You may wish to time your visit to coincide with the very popular International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival which is held each year in Buxton

Buxton Opera HouseOther Buxton attractions include the well known Buxton Opera House, Pooles Cavern, a stunning cave system known as 'The First Wonder of the Peak' set in the magnificent surroundings of Buxton Country Park, Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and much more besides, see the Links page for more information on Buxton and the Days Out page for more things to do and see.
